01What the Emirates ID actually is
The Emirates ID is a required identity card for every resident. You'll use it for almost everything โ opening a bank account, picking up a package, or checking into a clinic. It's linked to your visa, so it expires at the same time your visa does.
02Applying for your Emirates ID
Your Emirates ID application happens in parallel with your residency visa process. You'll typically visit (or your PRO will book) an appointment at an approved typing center or ICP service center for biometric capture โ fingerprints, a photo and a digital signature. The physical card is usually delivered by courier within a couple of weeks, though you can often use a digital version via UAE Pass in the meantime.
03UAE Pass โ your digital signature
UAE Pass is the national digital identity app. Set it up in your first week. Once verified, it works as your legal digital signature. You can use it to log into government portals, some banks, telecom providers, and even some private companies. Many tasks that used to need an office visit โ like signing a tenancy contract โ can now be done through UAE Pass instead.
04ICP Smart Services and GDRFA
ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) handles Emirates ID and federal visa services through its Smart Services app โ you can check visa status, pay fines, and track applications there. GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) is the Dubai-specific equivalent for residency matters if you're based in Dubai; other emirates may route through their own local directorate alongside ICP.
05If your ID is lost, stolen or expiring
A lost or stolen Emirates ID should be reported and a replacement requested through ICP as soon as possible โ you'll need to file a police report if it was stolen. Renewal reminders are sent by SMS and through the ICP app, but it's worth calendaring your own reminder 60โ90 days ahead, since a lapsed Emirates ID can complicate bank access, medical visits and other day-to-day tasks even if your underlying visa is still valid.
