01Your options as a freelancer
People searching for a “freelance visa” are usually looking at one of two routes: the federal Green Visa, which lists freelancers and self-employed people as an eligible group, or a freelance permit offered by some free zones, which bundles the right to work with a residence visa. Which one suits you depends on your profession, your clients and where you want to live.
02The Green Visa for freelancers
The official UAE government portal describes the Green Visa as a renewable residence visa valid for 5 years. Holders do not need a sponsor, and they can sponsor family members, including a spouse and children. Eligible groups are skilled workers, freelancers and self-employed people, and investors or business partners.
The portal does not list the salary, qualification or permit requirements for each group, and these can change. Check the current conditions with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) or the residency authority of your emirate, such as GDRFA in Dubai.
03Freelance permits from free zones
Several free zones, especially those focused on media, technology and creative work, offer freelance permits. The terms, the activities allowed and the visa that comes with it differ from zone to zone. Ask each zone directly what the permit covers, where you may work, and whether you can serve clients across the UAE or only within the zone.
If your plans grow beyond freelancing, our business setup guide explains company licences and free zones.
04What to check before you apply
- Your activity. Make sure your type of work is covered by the permit or visa you pick.
- Who you can invoice. Confirm whether you can work for clients inside the UAE, abroad, or both.
- Health insurance. Residence visas generally require valid health cover. See our healthcare guide.
- Tax and banking. Business income can bring tax and registration duties, covered in our taxes guide, and many banks ask for a licence or permit when you open an account, see our banking guide.
Working on your own account without the right permit or licence can lead to penalties, so get the permit first. If you work for a company outside the UAE rather than for clients, the remote work visa may fit you better.
FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Is there a freelance visa in the UAE?
Not as a single national visa. Freelancers and self-employed people usually use the 5-year Green Visa, or a freelance permit offered by a free zone. Each has its own conditions.
How long is the Green Visa valid for freelancers?
The official UAE government portal says the Green Visa is renewable and valid for 5 years, with no sponsor needed.
Can I sponsor my family on a Green Visa?
Yes. The official portal says Green Visa holders can sponsor family members, including a spouse and children. The exact conditions are set by the issuing authorities.
Is a freelance permit the same as a remote work visa?
No. A freelance permit lets you work for your own clients. The remote work visa is for people employed by a company outside the UAE.
Where can I check the current requirements?
On the ICP and GDRFA websites for the Green Visa, and with the free zone directly for a freelance permit. Requirements change, so always confirm with the authority before you pay a consultant.
