A car is how most people get around in the UAE, and heat, long highways and heavy traffic make it harder on a car than in many places. This guide pulls the main car questions new residents ask into one page. For licences, Salik tolls and fines, start with our driving and transport guide.
Disclosure: Cyclone Auto Services, a garage in Al Quoz, is a featured listing in our directory. Where we mention it below, it is marked “Featured garage”, and the prices and details come from the garage.
01Buying a used car in Dubai: what to check first
- Service and accident history. Ask for the service records and for proof the car has not been in a serious accident. Walk away if the seller cannot show either.
- Fines and finance. Before you pay, check the car has no unpaid fines and no outstanding bank loan registered against it. Use the official police and RTA services, or ask the registration centre, not the seller’s word.
- A pre-purchase inspection. Pay an independent garage to check the engine, gearbox, suspension, AC and signs of repainting. It costs little compared with a major repair.
- The paperwork. Make sure the name on the registration card matches the seller, and agree what you are paying for in writing.
02Dealership or independent garage?
Dealerships use the manufacturer’s tools and parts, and they are the simplest choice while your car is under the manufacturer’s warranty. They are usually the most expensive option.
Independent garages are often cheaper and can be more flexible, and good ones specialise in particular brands. Quality varies a lot, so choose with care (see section 7).
Whether servicing outside the dealership affects your warranty depends on your car and its warranty terms. Read the warranty booklet or ask the manufacturer in writing before you switch. Once the warranty has ended, many owners move to a trusted independent garage.
03How often to service your car in Dubai’s heat
Follow the service schedule in your owner’s manual. Many manufacturers publish a shorter schedule for “severe” conditions, and long periods of heat, dust and stop-and-go traffic can fall into that category, so check what yours says. Heat is especially hard on the battery, the tyres, the coolant and the engine oil.
- Have the battery tested before summer, because heat shortens battery life.
- Check tyre condition and pressure often. Hot roads wear tyres faster.
- Keep coolant and oil at the right level and use the grade your manual specifies.
If you are not sure what your car needs, a general check-up is a sensible start.
04Car AC trouble: warning signs before summer
Do not wait for the first 45°C day. Get the AC checked if you notice any of these:
- Air that takes longer than before to turn cold, or never gets properly cold
- Weak airflow from the vents
- A musty smell when the AC starts
- Strange noises when the AC is on
A garage can check for leaks and test the system. Ask for the problem to be shown to you, and for a quote before any work begins.
05Looking after a luxury or performance car
Cars with air suspension, complex electronics or tuned engines need more specialist care. This is the area where an independent garage with real brand experience matters most, for example on Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and Range Rover. Choose a garage with real experience on your brand, ask which diagnostic tools it uses, and keep all service records, because they matter when you sell. Be careful with tuning and ECU changes. They can affect reliability and, depending on the car, insurance and warranty, so ask about both first.
06What to do if you break down
- Switch on your hazard lights and, if you can do it safely, move the car off the road.
- If you are on a highway, stay away from moving traffic. It is usually safer to wait outside the car and well away from the road.
- Call your insurer’s or breakdown provider’s number. Many policies include roadside help.
- If anyone is hurt or the car is blocking traffic, call 999.
- Take photos of the car and its position, and keep any receipt for towing or repairs.
Save a roadside assistance number in your phone before you need it.
07How to choose a garage: 8 questions to ask
- Will you give me a written, itemised quote before starting?
- Do you start work only after I approve it?
- Will you show me the faulty part, or a photo or video of it?
- Are the parts genuine (OEM), aftermarket or used, and is that written on the invoice?
- What warranty or guarantee, if any, applies to the work and the parts, what does it exclude, and is it in writing?
- Do you have experience with my brand and model?
- What are your opening hours and how can I reach you if there is a problem?
- Is VAT included in the price you quote?

FAQFrequently Asked Questions
What should I check before buying a used car in Dubai?
Check the service and accident history, make sure there are no unpaid fines or outstanding bank loan on the car, get an independent garage to inspect it, and make sure the registration name matches the seller.
Is it better to service my car at the dealership or an independent garage?
Dealerships are the simplest choice while the manufacturer’s warranty applies, but cost more. Independent garages can be cheaper and specialised. Check your warranty terms before you switch.
How often should I service my car in Dubai?
Follow the schedule in your owner’s manual. Many manufacturers list a shorter schedule for severe conditions such as heat and dust, so check what yours says.
When should I get my car AC checked?
Before summer, or as soon as the air is slow to cool, airflow is weak, there is a musty smell or you hear strange noises.
What should I do if my car breaks down on a Dubai highway?
Switch on your hazard lights, move off the road if it is safe, stay away from moving traffic and call your insurer or breakdown provider. If anyone is hurt or the car blocks traffic, call 999.
How do I choose a trustworthy garage?
Ask for a written itemised quote, work only after your approval, a look at the faulty part, clear information about the type of parts, and exactly what warranty or guarantee applies and what it excludes.
What is the difference between a general check-up and a pre-purchase inspection?
A general check-up looks at your car’s current condition and likely faults. A pre-purchase inspection is a more comprehensive assessment done before you buy a used car. Garages price them differently. For example, Cyclone Auto Services lists AED 350 for a general check-up (waived if you approve repairs there) and pre-purchase inspections from AED 800.
